Busy summe r for Dixie star
By Terry Boehmker, Post staff reporter

Emily Culbertson is taking her golf game on the road this summer to compete in national a nd state events.

But the Dixie Heights senior-to-be isn't going to pass up the Northern Kentucky Junior Ama teur on Thursday and Friday at Eagle Creek Country Club in Crittenden.

Culbertson, the runner-up in the 2001 girls' state high school tournament, is one of 16 ent ries in the girls' division for the junior amateur.

There's a total of 91 golfers in the three boys' divisions, including returning champ Jon athan Ehlen.

Culbertson finishes a PGA Junior Series event at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington today. She is in third place in the girls' division.

Last month, Culbertson placed sixth in a Future Collegians Tour event at Doral Country Club i n Miami with rounds of 76, 76 and 71.

When the NCAA open recruiting period begins on July 1, Culbertson will likely hear from sever al major college golf coaches. She has already made unofficial recruiting visits to Kentucky, Wake Forest and Tennesse e.

Ehlen won a rain-shortened tourney last year. Jerod Cahil, one shot back last year, is back. The field also includes Jay Sutton, who tied for third in the boys' state tournament last October.

The junior amateur is one of 15 events on the 7-Up Junior Tour schedule this summer. The othe r tournaments will be played at courses in Boone, Campbell, Kenton, Grant, Pendleton, Mason, Gallatin and Owen counties.

Final point leaders in four boys' and one girls' divisions will compete in the champi onship on Aug. 5-6 at Lassing Pointe and Triple Crown.

Culbertson has won the 7-Up Junior Tour girls' title the last three years. Boys' defending champs: Cahill (16-18), Alex Rechtin (14-15), Matt Neal (12- 13) and Jordan Erlewine (11-under).
