Jolly takes slow road to golf title

By Bob Ettinger, Post contributor

Justin Jolly has a slow and easy attitude.

He plays golf the same way.

''I just sit back and enjoy life,'' Jolly said. ''I take my time out there on the course. A lot of people try and get on me for my slow play, but I'm not going to try and speed it up.''

Jolly slowly played his way to the boys' overall championship of the Northern Kentucky Junior Amateur at Highland Country Club on Tuesday with a two-round score of 10-over-par 150.

Jolly shot a 9-over 79 Tuesday for a one-stroke victory over Brook Reeves, Andrew Stephens and Jonathan Ehlen, who each finished at 151.

Reeves was awarded first place in the boys' 17-18 age group. Stephens won the 15-16 division, and Ehlen won the 13-14 class. Joey Landrum shot a 179 to win the 11-12 age group.

''It's a good start for the year,'' Jolly said. ''I hope to carry it on throughout the season. I knew that if I played the best I could, eventually I would come out on top. In the end, I did.''

CULBERTSON WINS GIRLS' TITLE - For 15-year-old Emily Culbertson, it's never too early to start working for a college golf scholarship.

Culbertson, a sophomore at Dixie Heights High School, will be playing all summer in hopes of improving her game enough to take a step toward that scholarship.

''They (the colleges) look at all four years (of high school),'' said Culbertson. ''So I want to do well all four years. It (playing the summer tournaments) keeps me loose all summer, so that in the fall I'm ready to play.''

With a 30-stroke win in the Northern Kentucky Junior Amateur, Culbertson started her summer season right. Culbertson's second-round 91 gave her a 174 for the tournament.
