Carl wins by a stroke
Edges veterans Spears and Wolff

Unheralded Alex Carl beat a pair of successful 7-Up Tour veterans to win the girls' competition at the rain-shortened Northern Kentucky Junior Amateur golf tournament on Tuesday at Hickory Sticks Golf Course.

Carl, from Beechwood High School, shot a two-day, 27-hole score of 120 to edge runner-up Emily Wolff (121) and third-place finisher Ryanne Spears (124). It was Carl's first 7-Up Junior Tour win of 2005. Tuesday's championship was the tour's fourth event of the season.

Wolff, from Boone County, and Spears, from Scott, both had one previous win on the tour this season.

In boys' action Tuesday at Hickory Sticks, Michael Burgan rallied from three shots off the first-day pace to win the boys' 16-18 division.

Burgan, from Grant County High School, carded an even-par 71 during Tuesday's final round to finish with a two-day score of 1-over-par 143. He finished two strokes ahead of runner-up Eric Fuldner, who followed up his Monday-low 69 with a 76 for a final score of 145.

Fuldner, from Campbell County, finished one stroke ahead of co-third-place finishers Mark Krebs and Jarrod Sharp, both of whom carded scores of 146. Krebs, from Newport Central Catholic, shot 71 on Tuesday. Sharp, from Grant County, shot matching scores of 73 both days.

The boys' 16-18 division was the only group to play all 36 holes of the stroke-play tournament. The rest of the field played 27 holes.

First-day leaders in all three boys' lower divisions prevailed on Tuesday to win championships.

Sean O'Daniel (118) won the boys' 14-15 competition, beating Jonathan Fletcher (120) by two strokes. Fletcher's 38 was Tuesday's lowest score in the division.

Mickey Sutton (115) handily won the boys' 12-13 competition, finishing eight strokes ahead of runner-up Phoenix Ramsey (123).

Carter Hibbard (77) edged runner-up Drew McDonald (79) by two strokes in boys' 11-under after nine holes of play each day.
