Burgan claims title with 2nd-round rally

Golfer Michael Burgan carded a tournament-low, even-par 71 in Tuesday's final round and rallied from two shots off the first-day lead to win the Northern Kentucky Junior Amateur at Flagg Springs Golf Course in Campbell County.

Burgan, a recent Grant County High School graduate who placed 20th at the 2005 state golf tournament, finished with a two-day score of 147, which was one shot better than Michel Neri's 148 in the boys' 16-18 division. Neri's 73 on Tuesday was the tournament's second lowest one-day score. Janson Cahill (150) finished third in the boys' upper division.

First-day leader Sean Burke, who shot a 74 on Monday, fell back to fourth place in the upper division after carding a 78 on Tuesday, for a final score of 152.

Andrew Desmarais' two-day score of 151 vanquished the competition in the boys' 14-15 division. Desmarais won by 18 shots over co-runners-up Kenton Lucas and Michael Petering, both of whom carded matching final scores of 169.

Connor Hempel won the boys' 12-13 competition with a two-day score of 160, which was five shots better than co-runners-up Carter Hibbard and Andrew Kendall. Hibbard and Kendall finished with scores of 165.

Lane Weaver won the boys' 11-under division with a final score of 87. Weaver's 39 over nine holes on Tuesday followed his score of 48 over nine on Monday. Joe Kendall and Drew McDonald finished with a score of 91 and in a tie for second place in the boys' lower division.

Emily Wolff carded the lowest one-round score of the tournament in the girls' upper division competition, firing a 9-over-par 80 on Tuesday en route to a two-day score of 164, which was eight shots better than division runner-up Jennifer Rechtin (172).

Madison McGehee won the girls' lower division with a final score of 203. Kimberly Schroer (205) finished runner-up in the division.
